Why study Real Estate at NAIT?

Like with any program at NAIT, the polytechnic approach brings theory, practice, and industry expertise together to ensure students are confidently prepared on day one of their new career. By taking your real estate training with NAIT, you'll learn the same Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) course material as every other real estate licensee in Alberta, and you'll have the advantage of access to:

You can expect to spend between 5-10 hours per week on your courses. This is an estimate and some learners will progress faster. You should be prepared to invest many hours per week to stay on track.

Before enrolling in the RELA program

To complete this program as part of your real estate licensing requirements, you must:

  1. Create a MyRECA account with the Real Estate Council of Alberta's (RECA) and receive your RECA CON ID.
  2. Receive your eligibility acceptance letter from RECA. This letter will contain your RECA CON ID number.
  3. Create a NAIT Student ID to be able to register in the course.
  4. Fill out and submit this digital enrolment request form. It should be completed and submitted at least 5 days before your course begins.

Reminder: you must complete the Fundamentals of Real Estate (RELA100) course before you can enrol in any other real estate licensing courses.

Real Estate Fundamentals (RELA100)

  • Course Length: 70 hours

  • Course Delivery: self-paced online study with access to support from industry experts and practicing real estate agents

  • Certification: Certificate Completion

  • Certificate Validity: 3 months to write your pre-licensing exam with RECA

  • Passing Grade for RECA Administered Exam (to be written after completing RELA100 at NAIT): 70%

Practice of Residential Real Estate (RELA101)

  • Course Length: 60 hours

  • Course Delivery: self-paced online study with access to support from industry experts and practicing real estate agents

  • Certification: Certificate Completion

  • Accredited By: Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA)

  • Certificate Validity: 3 months to write your exam with RECA

  • Passing Grade for RECA Administered Exam (to be written after ​completing RELA101 at NAIT): 70%

How to get your realty license

  1. Review Real Estate Council of Alberta's (RECA)  eligibility requirements to become a licensee and follow the steps on the webpage to create your MyRECA account.
  2. Receive your eligibility acceptance letter from RECA. Your letter will contain your RECA CON ID number, which you need before registering for your course(s).  
  3. Register for your course(s). 
    1. Fundamentals of Real Estate (RELA100) must be completed first, and you will have 3 months to complete it. Note: You must provide your RECA eligibility letter and Learner Letter Form to register in RELA courses to confirm your eligibility.
    2. Once NAIT has notified RECA of your course completion, you have 3 months to write your exam. The exam will be administered in a physical exam centre and will take around 3 hours to complete. See the full details under RECA's exam section.  
    3. Write your exam. You have 2 attempts to pass the licensing exam, and a minimum of 70% is required.  
  4. After completion of the Real Estate Fundamentals course and a successful exam pass, RECA will notify you that you are eligible to register in a specialization course from one of the following practice areas: 
    1. Residential
    2. Commercial 
    3. Rural 
    4. Property Management 
  5. After passing both the Fundamentals and the specialization area exam, refer to steps 5 to 7 on RECA's licensing page.

Before you can enrol in the Real Estate program

To complete this program as part of your real estate licensing requirements, you must first create a MyRECA account with the Real Estate Council of Alberta's (RECA) and receive your RECA eligibility acceptance letter with your RECA CON ID. You will need this letter before registering for your NAIT course.

Paperwork is required to process your registration.

  • Please fill out the enrolment request form. It must be completed and submitted at least 5 days before your course begins.
    • Note: if you are taking these courses as part of pursuing your real estate license rather than out of general interest, you will need to attach your eligibility acceptance letter from RECA to the form submission.
  • We cannot process your course registration without this form submission.
  • While planning your schedule, keep in mind that RELA courses start the first (1) day of every month.

Completed a prerequisite course at another institution?

If you completed your Real Estate Fundamentals course (i.e., RELA100 at NAIT) at a different institution, you will need to provide proof of your completion before we can approve your enrolment in any of the other Real Estate (RELA) courses. Please fill out the enrolment request form and attach evidence of the prerequisition course completion from your MyRECA account.

  • Face to Face: Where: In-person meetings. When: Course is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend. Face-to-face instruction at all class meetings. Location may be on campus or at a worksite.
  • Blended: Where: Mixture of in-person & online components. When: Course is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend. Combination of face-to-face and online components at specific times. Some online components may be accessed online anytime.
  • Hyflex: Where: Choice to attend in-person or online meetings. When: Course is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend. For each class, students choose to attend in-person with the instructor or online at a specific time.
  • Remote Live Delivery: Where: Online with instructor. When: Course is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend. Instruction is delivered at set times online. Students do not come to campus.
