Student Non-Academic Misconduct
Those impacted by non-academic misconduct of a NAIT student have multiple support and response options available. The Student Conduct & Accountability Office (OSCA) receives complaints of non-academic student misconduct. A Student Conduct Officer will provide information on possible next steps and procedural options for addressing concerns when a student has not met their responsibilities. All options are grounded in principles of fairness and natural justice. NAIT’s preference for addressing complaints is through the Alternative Dispute Resolution process, when possible.
Options to respond to non-academic misconduct include:
Record of Information: A record of information is a stored record that outlines knowledge of behaviours which may be a violation of the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy that are not addressed through further process. The Student Conduct & Accountability Office may offer Conflict Coaching or referral to NAIT support services in addition to creating a record.
Alternative Dispute Resolution: The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process involves a variety of pathway opportunities to resolve a concern or complaint that include some level of collaboration and cooperation between complainants and respondents. The Student Conduct Officer acts as a multi-partial facilitator to support resolution.
Formal Adjudication: The Formal Adjudication process is an investigative process where the Student Conduct Officer gathers information and determines whether a policy violation has taken place. This is done using a balance of probabilities evidentiary standard. The Student Conduct Officer assigns sanctions as appropriate including recommendations of suspension and expulsion.
