Medical Radiologic Technology is the art and science of correctly positioning the patient and X-ray equipment to produce and record images for the purpose of visualizing the extent of disease or injury to a patient. While many X-ray examinations are performed in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, they are also carried out in the operating room, the emergency department, on wards, in specialized intensive care units, and in physician-led community clinics.

The Medical Radiologic Technology program teaches students how to perform X-rays, including evaluating the diagnostic quality of images, patient care and quality control. Students also gain expert knowledge in radiation safety and protection practices. Many of the radiographic examinations and procedures involve working alongside physicians, other technologists, nurses and non-medical personnel.

Hands-on, industry-relevant skills

Medical Radiologic Technologists demonstrate technical proficiency, critical thinking and attention to detail while maintaining empathy and strong communication with their patients. Our program prepares you to work in close proximity to sick and injured people and handle unexpected, stressful situations while developing the physical stamina required by this profession.

MRTs spend their days on their feet in a fast-paced environment, requiring good body mechanics to prevent injury while maneuvering equipment and transferring patients to our tables. Expect to work in a collaborative team environment and engage in continuous learning to keep up with technology changes.

Classroom and study hours

The MRT program has a heavy course load.

Students will be enrolled in 6 courses each term, most with a lab component
Expect to attend in person labs at NAIT on 2 - 3 days each term.
Most lectures are hosted virtually and can be attended from home. Expect at least 35 - 45 hours of course work every week.

Clinical Placement

Upon completion of 2 didactic terms (Sept to April) students go directly to their 3 clinical terms (May to May), spending about a calendar year practicing their skills as part of an active healthcare team in a designated clinical site.

It is important to note that clinical training may require students to relocate and training may occur at more than one location. All costs associated with relocation and incurred during clinical rotations, are the responsibility of the student.

Sites include Bonnyville, Camrose, Cold Lake, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Hinton, Lloydminster, Peace River, Red Deer, Wetaskiwin, Whitehorse, and Yellowknife.

Options for rotations in BC and Manitoba may be explored.

Program goals

Demonstrate conduct and decision-making in alignment with professional expectations, standards of practice, ethical guidelines, regulations, and legislation.
Provide safe, compassionate, patient & family-centred care and appropriate interventions to a diverse population.
Demonstrate effective communication, conflict resolution, and critical thinking skills within a collaborative interprofessional team environment.
Operate radiographic imaging systems, accessory equipment, and manage health information systems.
Perform and integrate principles of radiographic procedures to acquire images for diagnostic and interventional purposes.

Career Outcomes

The Medical Radiologic Technology field continues to experience tremendous technological changes in diagnostic methods due to the incorporation of computers and advancements in digital imaging technology.

Upon successful completion of the MRT program the graduate is eligible to challenge the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) entry-to-practice certification examination to become a certified radiological technologist.

In order to practice as a Medical Radiation Technologist in the province of Alberta, technologists are required to be registered with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) to obtain a license to practice.
