The new Automotive Service Technology diploma is a unique opportunity to get the technical and career essential skills you need to succeed in the automotive industry. It can also serve as a pathway to apprenticeship.

This two-year diploma provides exposure to new trends and technologies. Once you complete the program, you will have the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience in dynamic shop environments to diagnose vehicle systems, and repair and maintain vehicles.

The diploma program offers a direct pathway into trades training at NAIT without having to first be a registered apprentice.

Delivery Mode

  • In-person - All your class activity will be delivered in person, on campus.
  • Online - All your class activity will be delivered online.
  • Hybrid - Your classes will be a mixture of in person and online learning. You must be able to come to campus and participate remotely online.
  • Your choice - Your program offers a variety of class delivery options (in person, online, or a mixture of both) and you can select which type of classes to take. If you wish, you can complete your entire program either in-person or online.
  • HyFlex - All your classes are delivered for simultaneous participation in person and online. You can choose daily to attend your classes in person or join remotely online.

  • Your choice - You can select class times and days that fit your schedule. There are a variety of class options for you to choose from including daytime, evening, weekdays or weekends.

  • Evenings & Weekends - Classes are scheduled after 5 p.m. on weekdays or anytime on weekends.

  • Weekends - Classes are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays.

Credit programs that accept international applicants also meet the eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program, including programs with a Hybrid delivery mode. Each student is responsible for maintaining their eligibility throughout their studies.

The expected starting salary for individuals with a(n) Automotive Service Technology Diploma is $37,440.
This salary information was based on graduate data from the past 3 years and reflects annual salaries for graduates who claimed they were working more than 30 hours per week. Graduates who quoted salaries below $10,000 and above $200,000 per year have been excluded. You may apply for advanced credit once you have been accepted into the program. Advanced credit can be Transfer Credit (for completed post-secondary courses) or PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition).

The automotive trade consists of many different, yet related, concepts. Students will learn about topics such as safety, legislation and the essential skills required for the Automotive Service Technician trade.

AUTO1010Automotive Electrical Fundamentals

Automotive technicians need a solid foundation of electrical fundamentals to be able to diagnose and repair today's automobile. To achieve this students will gain an understanding in basic electrical circuits, batteries, magnetism, electromagnetism, and hybrid safety.

AUTO1020Automotive Steering and Suspension
  • Requisites: This course is available to students in the Automotive Service Technology program. Co-Requisite: AUTO1000.

A vehicle’s steering and suspension system is critical to its handling and stability. Students will acquire an understanding of the theory of operation of the steering and suspension system. In addition to this, students will diagnose, service, and repair the steering and suspension system.

The proper operation of a vehicle’s brake system is a very important safety component. Students will learn to properly inspect, diagnose, and repair the brake system. The systems involved will be disc, drum, hydraulic components, and ABS service.

ENGL1154Effective Communications I

This course provides students with the fundamentals of effective English and communications skills. The course concentrates on research, written, and verbal/nonverbal communications strategies in order to succeed in industry-related organizations.

AUTO1200Lower Engine Fundamentals
  • Requisites: This course is available to students in the Automotive Service Technology program. Pre-Requisites: AUTO1000, AUTO1010. Co-Requisites: CHEM1242, AUTO1300.

Lower engine operation requires close tolerances to operate properly. Students will gain an understanding of the design and operation of crankshafts, engine blocks, and lubrication systems. As a result, students perform inspection procedures and diagnoses engine problems.

AUTO1210Automotive Starting and Charging

The automotive charging and starting systems operate under varying electrical demands. Students will learn basic electrical operation, charging, and starting system operation. The student will apply industry standard testing and diagnostic procedures to provide recommended repairs to the customer.

AUTO1220Automotive Drivetrain Systems

The automotive drivetrain is subject to high demand and stress under a variety of conditions. Given this, students will learn about manual transmissions, transaxles, transfer cases, clutches and electronic transfer cases. The student will learn path of power, correct diagnosis, and repair procedures.

AUTO1300Upper Engine Fundamentals
  • Requisites: This course is available to students in the Automotive Service Technology program. Pre-Requisites: AUTO1000, AUTO1010. Co-Requisites: CHEM1242, AUTO1200.

The upper engine components require precision servicing to operate efficiently with exposure to high RPMS and temperatures. Students will measure upper engine components for serviceability. They will also study the operating principles of the cooling system, air induction and exhaust systems.

CHEM1242Petroleum Chemistry
  • Requisites: This course is available to students in the Industrial Heavy Equipment Technician and Automotive Service Technology programs.

This course studies the mining, extraction, and refining of crude oil to produce fuels, lubricants, and greases. The performance of these crude oil products is evaluated in the laboratory using standardized testing methods.

AUTO1230Vehicle Control Systems

Modern vehicles incorporate the use of computer control systems to provide for their function. Students will learn about the basic operation, configuration, and networking of vehicle control systems. Students will also develop an understanding of the best practices for diagnosing problems that arise within a vehicle's control systems.

AUTO2110Advanced Automotive Electrical Systems

Modern vehicles now incorporate electrical systems that are used to provide more features for the occupant. Students will learn the operation of vehicle power accessory systems. As a result, students will also learn the best practices used to diagnose and repair failures within a vehicle's power accessory systems.

Automobiles require fuel to be safely stored and delivered for efficient use in an internal combustion engine. Students will learn about fuel storage systems, fuel delivery systems, and how related problems with fuel delivery can affect combustion and emissions.

Gasoline powered internal combustion engines require heat energy from a spark plug to begin the combustion process. Students will learn the basic operation of spark ignition systems and how ignition affects performance and emissions. Students will learn the emission control systems that are in place to reduce pollution from automobiles and how to diagnose problems within those systems.

In this course you will learn about diesel fuel system operation and diagnosis. International Applicants

This program accepts international students.

PGWP Eligibility

This program does not meet eligibility criteria for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), following Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) field of study requirement. Students who applied for a study permit before November 1, 2024, are not affected by the new field of study rule and may be eligible for a PGWP.

While graduates are currently ineligible to apply for a PGWP, NAIT still welcomes international students to this program to gain valuable knowledge and skills to pursue your career goals, whether in Canada under another type of permit or in your home country or other international markets.

Co-Op Work Permit

Mandatory Co-op: This program has a mandatory work-integrated learning component. International students must apply for a co-op work permit and have it approved before the start of their work placement.
