Credit programs that accept international applicants also meet the eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program, including programs with a Hybrid delivery mode. Each student is responsible for maintaining their eligibility throughout their studies.

Hands-on, industry-relevant training 

In this 2 year diploma program you will build on your prior learning as a primary care paramedic and learn about providing advanced emergency care, including assessment and treatment of patients with a variety of medical disorders and injuries. Your learning environment will consist of lectures, labs, clinical simulations and practicum. Areas of learning will be focused on but are not excluded to:

  • Human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
  • Advanced life support skills including medical and trauma management
  • Pharmacology
  • Child birth and neonatal care
  • Pediatric patient care
  • Diverse patient populations
  • Professionalism, inter professionalism, and medical legal aspects

You will also be trained in physical and mental health self-care, to ensure you are prepared for a demanding patient care environment.

Practicum will consist of placement with ambulance services and a variety of acute care hospitals. You will be expected to work shifts including evenings, nights and weekends, and you may be required to travel outside of Edmonton for your practicum placement.

The first year of the program consists of lectures, labs and clinical simulations. The second year of the program consists of some lectures, labs and clinical simulation in advanced courses, as well as approximately 1200 hours of practicum.

You can expect to spend, on average:

  • 28 hours per week attending classes over the course of a semester
  • 15 to 20 hours per week studying and completing class assignments
  • 40 hours per week on practicum

This salary information was based on graduate data from the past 3 years and reflects annual salaries for graduates who claimed they were working more than 30 hours per week. Pathophysiology is a comprehensive course designed to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental changes that occur in the human body during disease and injury. It is essential that paramedics develop the cognitive skills to critically apply judgement and resourcefulness in the management of patients suffering a traumatic injury or environmental emergency. Paramedics must have a solid understanding of pharmacology when administering medications to treat patient symptoms or while treating a patient who has been exposed to a potentially toxic chemical, drug, or medication. In this unit, students will become familiar with the general concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Drugs used to manage a variety of conditions affecting all body systems will be studied. Special emphasis will be placed on medications commonly found in prehospital care. Students will also develop skills in drug calculation and drug administration.

Obstetrical and gynecological emergencies represent an important component of prehospital care. In this course, students will study Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathophysiology for the prehospital management of neonatal, obstetrical and gynecological emergencies. ACPA1260Health, Safety, and Wellness

Physical, mental, and emotional health is essential for paramedics. In this course, the student will promote personal health and well-being through a variety of activities and educational seminars. To enhance occupational health, the student will develop strategies for stress management and personal fitness. All students will undergo a personal fitness assessment at the beginning of the course as a means of determining areas for improvement. Safe lifting and moving techniques will be practiced and evaluated. Students will also learn and practice de-escalation techniques and strategies to deal with physical danger.

Many patients treated by EMS will require advanced cardiac care. This course integrates knowledge of normal and pathophysiological states of the cardiovascular system with knowledge of the Electrocardiogram (ECG), physical assessment and history taking. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), following Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements. Students must still meet all other PGWP eligibility requirements, including full-time and in-person study requirements.
