Thinking of tackling a new home renovation project or expanding your do-it-yourself knowledge and skills? Our Home Renovation courses can help!

Our series of courses provides the foundational skills and knowledge you need to take on household carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and framing projects.

Each course will provide you with plenty of hands-on experience and content that covers correct and compliant building techniques used by certified tradespeople. We will also show you how to properly handle and operate tools and adhere to industry safety standards.

Students who successfully complete all three courses will be eligible for a Home Renovation Fundamentals Certificate.

This course concentrates on the carpentry aspects of finishing a basement and is designed as a stand-alone course for those interested in this type of project work. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the confidence to begin and finish framing, drywalling, taping, baseboards, casing, mudding, sanding out, and door hanging. A hands-on component is included as well as a review of the relevant codes, theory, and tool safety.

Master basement electrical work! This hands-on weekend course will walk students through the essential steps in carrying out electrical work as part of their own basement project. Explore the important electrical challenges typically encountered during a basement renovation, such as installing wiring, electrical outlets, and lighting, including three-way switches. Students will familiarize themselves with the relevant codes, permits, and inspection processes that apply to their project. Upon successful completion of this course, students will know which parts of the work they can safely do on their own and which parts require an expert. Students should bring their own safety glasses and tape measure to class.

This home renovation course is designed for homeowners who require the information and skills needed to install plumbing. Discover the dimension requirements and layout of fixtures, and engage in a demonstration of drain installation for showers and bathtubs. In this course, you will work with solvent welding and gluing, the installation of a basin sink and a set of taps, and the installation of a toilet. Work on PEX and expansion and compression styles. Additionally, you will be able to conduct tests to check for leaks. All work (waterlines, drainage, and fixtures) is pressure tested with water to ensure sound workmanship. With the skills gained in this course, you will be able to perform plumbing installation tasks related to showers, bathtubs, and toilets. The course content assumes that there is rough-in done below the concrete flooring and the focus is on installations of plumbing lines and fixtures above the concrete slab surface.
